Ashland, a small town in extreme eastern Kentucky, perches on the banks of the Ohio River. The city's downtown features large, ornate homes built by early industrialists.
The trail begins on the north side of Ned Branch and follows the Rockcastle River (Lake Cumberland). The first half of the trail is fairly wide. Wildflowers are abundant in the spring.
