Ashland, a small town in extreme eastern Kentucky, perches on the banks of the Ohio River. The city's downtown features large, ornate homes built by early industrialists.
A hike on Ned Branch is downhill all the way if it is hiked from KY 3497. The trail drops 300 feet through a gorge carved out by the trail's namesake. There are several stream crossings along the way, but hikers should be able to make most of them without getting their feet wet. The last quarter mile of trail passes through a stand of large beech and buckeye trees. This section of the trail is especially nice in April and May, when spring wildflowers are in bloom.
During the winter months when the campground gate is closed, hikers will need to plan on walking out the campground entrance road. This will add another half mile to the walk.
