Can the Texas State Capitol be any less beloved as it is giant? Texans do like to build the world big and this is the largest state capitol in the U.S., even larger than the National Capitol. (When it was built, the press went farther, to bill it as "The Seventh Largest Building in the World." This may have been true in 1885.) The inside is as impressive as the pink-granite exterior with murals and vaults, paintings and sculptures. The rotunda is one of those strange and fun whispering galleries; whispers can hiss quite clearly from a distance.
