Nestled between Cincinnati and Marietta, Portsmouth, Ohio, population almost 21,000 is a small town close to the border of Kentucky. The area is rich in outdoor and recreational activities from the parks and forests surrounding the town.
There are several state parks in the area, and Wayne National Forest is not far from Portsmouth and Gallipolis. Hiking, fishing, biking and camping are all available--the problem is deciding which park to visit. Between Shawnee and Forked Run State Parks among others, some of the best backpacking trails in the state are on hand. Off-roading, rock climbing and golfing are available at other recreational areas near Ironton and Pomeroy.
It may be a small town, but the arts are still present, with local opera, and theater groups in Portsmouth. The Bob Evans Farms are in nearby Rio Grande, and remain a historic landmark to the once mom and pop restaurant turned national chain.
Portsmouth is accessible via U.S. 23 connecting the small town to Columbus and U.S. 52 running along the Ohio River.
